Effective Printed Materials Make Great Trade Show Handouts

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Rick Hendershot Of all the things you can give out at your trade show booth, by far the most useful and most direct in terms of communicating your sales message is some kind of printed material. Unfortunately, compared to more imaginative handouts, printed materials can be fairly ordinary — some would call them boring. But the fact remains that printed materials are almost always the best way to communicate your promotional message. You work hard to make an impression with your trade show booth. And you train your staff to say all the right things. But once your visitors are gone there are really only two things connecting them with your company and your products: your follow-up strategy, and your handouts. Will your handouts make it past the waste basket? Have you made them an integral part of your follow-up strategy? One of your primary goals should be to put a piece of product literature into the hands of your prospects and get them to take it back to the office. You want to avoid it being thrown into the garbage can just outside the exhibition hall. Why printed product literature? One important reason why product literature makes such a popular handout is because printed pieces of paper or card stock are inexpensive. And when your printed pieces are well designed and nicely produced they can be much more effective in terms of communicating your message than things like hats, mugs or pens. So what makes an effective piece of product literature? Here are a few suggestions. First, creative graphic design is important. A poorly designed cheap one colour flier does not look good on your company or your products. You often don’t need an expensive multi-page brochure. But what you do need is an attractive, simple advertising piece that has catchy graphics and a clear statement of “the pitch”. Use full colour photographs and a striking headline. And try to come up with something more than a description of the product. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. Ask what features and benefits they are looking for in your product. And then create a “benefit-rich” statment in your product literature that focuses on your product’s customer-oriented benefits. Second, make an offer your potential customers cannot refuse. Give them something like a free pen or a credit against their first order for filling in an inquiry form or customer survey. Or coordinate your offer with your website by encouraging your prospects to take advantage of a special offer they can only access online. This strategy should encourage your prospects to keep your handouts, at the same time as enticing them to respond by accessing your website to have another look at your special offer. In other words, this could be a very effective followup strategy. Third, design your printed handouts so your prospects will be likely to keep them. Everybody keeps business cards, so make sure to include a business card in your handout package. Many people keep business cards for years — often long after the person has left the company or the company has ceased to exist. Business cards are important, so make yours stand out from the crowd. Printing is so inexpensive now you can print your cards in full color without incurring much of an expense. Use a full color photo of your product, or some other striking photo to communicate your marketing message. These days online photography websites have hundreds of photographs you can use for almost nothing. Another idea is a full color post card / business card combination. Design the 3.5″ x 6″ postcard as a coupon or a “request for more information” that has your company mailing address pre-printed on the reverse side. When your prospects tear off the perforated card they are left with a business card for their card file or Rolodex The imaginative ways you can use printed materials is almost limitless. Put a bit of time and effort into designing striking handouts and you won’t be disappionted with the returns. Rick Hendershot is President of Linknet Promotions. Winter Snow Can Cast A Blanket Of Depression

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Chris W James With overcast skies and the snow falling across the Northeast, many find themselves covered in a blanket of depression. Winter months are prime time for Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD as it’s commonly referred to. SAD is a mood disorder associated with depression and related to seasonal variations of light. During the winter months, the days become shorter, so we are exposed to less daylight. No big deal, right? Wrong! Here are some tips and valuable information from the National Institute of Mental Health to help defeat those “winter blues.” Possible Cause of this Disorder Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, has been linked to SAD. This hormone, which may cause symptoms of depression, is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases. -symptoms range from excessive weight gain and/or excessive eating and sleeping during the winter months -symptoms occur only during winter, with no recurring episodes during spring and summer -cravings for sugary or starchy foods -seasonal episodes substantually outnumber non seasonal depressive episodes Treatments Phototherapy or bright light therapy has been shown to suppress the brains secretion of melatonin. Although, there have been no research findings to definitely link this therapy with an antidepressant effect, many people respond to this treatment. The device most often used today is a bank of white fluorescent lights on a metal reflector and shield with a plastic screen. For mild symptoms, spending time outdoors during the day or arranging homes and workplaces to receive more sunlight may be helpful. One study found that an hours walk in winter sunlight was as effective as two and a half hours under bright artificial light. If phototherapy is not effective, other treatments are available such as medication. Other options are available. Speak with your family doctor for more information. Never Give Up! Chris W James, Founder of MusicCanHeal.org. Law School Know-How

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Robert Thatcher Getting into law school can be a very arduous task for aspiring students. You need to start as early as your freshman year in high school if you decide that being a lawyer is what you really want to do for the rest of your life. Do not be misled by the rosy portrayal of a lawyer’s life in TV or in the movies. In real life, lawyers would have 12 to 18 working hours, especially for those who are aspiring to be partners in their respective law firms. In order to achieve your goal, first, you need to have the correct mindset. Here are some tips on how students can realize their lifelong goal of becoming a lawyer: 1. Know what you want, and how to get it. First, reflect on the reasons why you would like to pursue this career. If you are just looking for the ‘flash’ or recognition of becoming a lawyer, remember that becoming one is sheer hard work. Just like in every profession, you need to give yourself into studying, then working as a lawyer. You may have this idealistic view as a kid that you want to save the world from the injustices that is why you would like to become a lawyer. If you find yourself still passionate about this cause, there is no harm in pursuing your dreams. More importantly, remember that once you decide on taking up law, you need to work very hard as a student. 2. Take off your rose-colored glasses. You need to understand that not every student who takes up law ends up with a job as a lawyer once they graduate. You will not necessarily end up as a courtroom hero saving an “innocent criminal” in this field. You may find yourself dealing with real estate, corporate law, divorce cases, or even drafting up wills. Prepare yourself for all possibilities because anything could happen. 3. Ask yourself, “Am I competitive enough?” From the time that you send in your applications, to the time that you take the exam to be a licensed practitioner, there will be competition. Applications for entry into law schools soar every year. What are your chances of being chosen and accepted as compared to thousands of other applicants? Check the skills that you have and once you are confident enough that you can get into law school, then you have gone through the first step in achieving your goal. 4. Go to a university which has a record of getting a lot of students into law school. It is safe to say that if you are a graduate of a school which “produces” a lot of great law students, then this should be a plus factor for you. There are universities that help the students get into law school by providing mock exams and interviews, and also offer letters of recommendation. 5. Having a good grade-point-average (GPA) is not enough, you need to pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) with flying colors. Maintain your GPA, and make sure that you perform well in the LSAT’s. There are web sites where you can take practice tests at a certain cost. You may also enroll in a course that aims to prepare you for this particular exam. 6. Be an early bird. Once you have decided on entering law school, make sure that you submit your applications way before the deadline. This should give you ample time to prepare. Finally, you need to organize your letter of recommendations, transcripts and all the paperworks that you will need to get in. You may seek the advice of a consultant, undergraduates or lawyers who have already passed the stage that you are now going through as a hopeful law school student. If you combine hard work with determination and you prepare everything in advance, you will surely gain entrance to the prestigious law school of your choice. Dating and Seduction - The Three Rules of Dating

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Sebastian Drake Dating is a crazy thing. Most people on oursociety haven’t figured it out. But it’s pretty cool once you’ve gotten itfigured, like my good friend and parter VincentDiCarlo. Allow me to share with you Vin’s Three Rules ofDating: 1) Have it be convenient for you. 2) Keep it inexpensive. 3) Make sure you can talk where you’re at. Or, if you prefer, The Three C’s of Dating: C1) Convenient. C2) Cheap. C3) Conversation. This will give you the best chance to get thegirl. Dates that are not Convenient for you willmake you seem like you’re working hard to impressher, or of low status. For this reason, don’tdrive three hours to see her, and certainly don’tplan a grand production with a limo and a stringquartet for your first dat. Cheap! Cheap is good. Cheap is no pressure. Awoman would rather have a pleasant walk through apark with a guy that’s no pressure than go out toeat an expensive restaurant that’s heavypressure. As a general rule, the more somethingcosts, the more pressure is involved. Also, womendon’t want to feel like you’re trying to buytheir attention. For these reasons, it’s actuallybetter to keep dates cheap. I’m not saying BEcheap, I’m saying go on inexpensive dates. And conversation, the all important thing thatlets you find about each other. You need a datethat lets conversation go smoothly and easily. Here’s a pop quiz - What are the two most commondates? If you answered movies and dinner, you’recorrect. But both violate cardinal rules ofdating. With a movie, there’s no chance for conversation. For two hours, you’re sitting there in the darkand can’t really talk. That’s all well and goodif you’re with your girlfriend, but on the firstfew dates, you don’t want that. And as anadditional negative, movies are getting more andmore expensive these guys. It could cost $30 fortwo tickets, popcorn, and drinks these days. Howit costs that much is beyond me, but that’s tooexpensive for a first day for sure. Dinner. Well, dinner’s not cheap. Even cheapdinner’s not cheap. So she might feel like you’retrying to buy her attention, which is always bad.It makes women uncomfortable, and makes her thinkyou’re of low status. Like you need to buy herattention. But here’s something many people don’t realizeabout dinner: It’s bad for conversation. You’resitting directly across from each other with verylittle subject matter except for menus. There’slots of pressure, and if the conversation slowsdown, it can be awkward, which wouldn’t be thecase in many of the dates I’m about to suggestfor you. Planning dinner as part of a date is nogood, so leave it alone. Good Dates: Remember, you want your dates to be Convenient,Cheap, and be able to have some niceConversation. How to do that? A favorite ‘date suggestion’ from me is coffee. Ilike coffee, since you’ve got options. You go geta cup of java with her on a Saturday afternoon. If she shows up and turns out to be the type ofgirl you don’t like (either she’s not physicallyyour type on further inspection, or has nothinggoing on upstairs) then you can leave no problem. But if she turns out to be an awesome girl? Aftercoffee, you can go grab a slice of pizza. Yes,it’s okay to eat on dates… making your dateitself getting a meal is bad, but if you’respending time together and get hungry, go eat. You’re basically treating her like someone you’revery comfortable with. If you went to get coffeewith a close friend, or one of your relativesthat you like, and got hungry, you’d say let’s gograb a bite to eat. No pressure there. Here’s a great line if you’re at coffee: “Youhungry?” If she answers yes, you say, “Okay metoo, let’s grab a slice of pizza.” If she saysno, you say, “That’s okay, you can watch me eat.”The second one, in particular, gets wonderfulresults and you just eat something light in frontof her and keep conversing. Other things: Walk around and look at touristystuff if you live in a city. Believe it or not, most people never see the sites in their homecity. I live on the East Coast, and I’ve neverseen the Statue of Libery in New York City, neverwalked the Freedom Trail in Boston, and haven’tbeen to any of the memorials in Washington D.C.Of course, I’ve seen all the touristy stuff inLondon and Mexico City and many western states, but that’s the point. If you walk down the roadfrom where you live to some historical monument,it’s a great time, and there’s a good chanceshe’s never been there. Of course, if you’re not in your home city, funlittle places still work too. You can have hersome you around a bit, which is good. As I mentioned earlier, I like coffeeshops.Starbucks-esque places are okay, but I reallylike artistic coffee shops, with different musicand fun things to look at. My favorite coffeeshopof all time had different music playing everytime I went, interesting local art on the walls, and one of the large unisex bathrooms hadfloor-to-ceiling chalkboards lining all fourwalls. People would write poetry and drawpictures on the chalkboards, or just sign theirname. Let me tell you, my friend, that was theeasiest bathroom in the world to get your dateinto with you! Another date I like: Window shopping. If you walkthrough a mall, there’s going to be plenty ofinteresting stores. You can have a cup of coffeeif you like coffee (or tea or hot chocolate orwhatever), and walk around looking at interestingthings. One of my favorite shops is a largekitchen shop with all sorts of cool things. They’ve got all sorts of crazy cookinginstruments, various pots and steamers for alldifferent types of cuisine, recipes and sauces ,cool looking plates, and anything and everythingelse you could imagine. From there, it’s reallyeasy to situationally relevantly talk about whatshe can cook, and what she’s going to cook foryou! Walk into whatever stores you please. Just becareful with Victoria’s Secret: Vincent once wasin Victoria’s with a girl he was on a date with, holding up lingerie and talking about she’d lookgood in. His date was loving it, eating it up,but then her friend walked over! Yikes, Vin tellsme the girl blushed pretty hard. Other places to go: Walks through parks, and byrivers and ponds. Free or cheap baseball games, either a local team’s or even a nearby school’s.Iceskating and rollerskating are actually prettygood first dates. They’re cheap if you go ontheir discount night (it’s Tuesday at my favoriterollerskating place), it’s convenient for me, andit’s great for conversation. And by the way, I’mnot exactly the best rollerskater in the world. In fact, I’ll admit it: I’m downright terrible. But it works well anyway! I say to her as we’rewalking in, “Okay, I can’t skate at all, soyou’re going to have to kinda ‘be the guy’ andhold my hand and make sure I don’t fall over,”said half-kiddingly. And to top it off, when weget our skates, I say, “You got this one?”Meaning, “Are you paying?” They do most of thetime, and it sets a good frame. Alright, so you’ve gone on a fun date or two withher. First you met for coffee, then walked aroundand went window shopping and looked at stores, had a bite to eat, and parted. Second date, youwent rollerskating or to one of those fun museumslike the Spy Museum in D.C. Now, you want to haveher over to your place. What’s a good date forthat? Cooking dinner with her. One of the best dates before you sleep with awoman. Not so good first date, but after that,it’s great. Now, I don’t want to hear you can’tcook - I can’t, either. I make exactly one dishwell that doesn’t involve grilling. But that’sall I need. I make a spaghetti with a mushroomand onion meat sauce, and French bread. It’s nothard. Learn one dish, or just have a general idea ofwhat you want to make. Then go over to her placewith the ingrediants, or have her come over toyours. From there, give her duties as you cook. Ihave my date stir the pasta or sauce while I diceup vegetables and get the meat ready. After we make a mess cooking, we wash up and chatwaiting for dinner to finish. Then we eat dinner, and maybe a little fresh fruit at the end. Havingher feed you strawberries is a nice touch if youcan pull it off. And from there, use your imagination. When itcomes time to bring them to the bedroom, rememberto use situational relevance. So you can eitherstart kissing her in the living room, then bringher by the hand to the bedroom, or you can saythere’s something interesting in your bedroomthat she just needs to see… Sebastian Drake has been writing in the fields of Seduction, Diplomacy, and Leadership for the past five years. Snow Throwers - What Type Is Right For You?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton Should You Get A Snow Thrower? These neat pieces of kit can be a godsend in winter, making short work of removing the snow that blocks the access to your home and therefore allowing you to stay nice and toasty indoors for longer! While the city and state administration take care of removing the snow public roads, the responsibility is all yours when it comes to your property so you may have to brave the arctic weather to clear the footpath to your door and the driveway. This is traditionally the mens job to sort out. A power tool like the snow thrower can be the difference between hours of punishing, back-breaking physical efforts and getting it all done very quickly. Single-Stage Snow Thrower Snow throwers, usually powered by a gas two-stroke engine, can be either single stage or two-stage. Both kinds feature a metallic or plastic trepan designed to cut through the snow or ice. Sometimes it can even be made of hard rubber. The machine features a series of gears that will drive the trepan to break off, gather and then blow the snow out of the way with impressive strength and velocity. The spinning trepan, or auger, contributes to propelling the thrower by being in contact with the ground, and pulling the machine forward as a result. A single-stage blower can usually cope with clearing between 12 and 22 inches of snow with each pass. You will most likely need several passes to rid your driveway of snow so these are usually only recommended for light residential usage. Whats In A Two-Stage Thrower? In addition to the trepan or auger, a two-stage thrower also features a pump, which makes the machine a lot more efficient by propelling the snow pumped up into the thrower much farther away. Sometime they can throw the snow gathered as far as 45 feet away, which can act as a magnet for all the kids in the neighborhood, so you should make sure they stand well away from the place the snow is going to land. A two-stage thrower is so powerful that it will make short work of any snow clearing job you can think of, and you may even have quite a bit of fun in the process! In a single pass your double-stage machine will be able to clear a width of snow of between 2 and 3 feet, so you should be back inside in no time at all. Making Snow Removal Easier - If this is allowed by your local authorities, you may be allowed to sprinkle salt onto it to ease up the process. Always check before going ahead to make sure you are complying with local regulations. - Think layers! When going out in very cold weather to clear the driveway after a snowfall, try to wear several layers of clothing: you will be better insulated against the cold and able to work more comfortably. - Be extremely careful when walking out on the snow or ice to clear the driveway as it is easy to fall and sustain serious injuries as a result: shoes with added grip may be a worthwhile consideration. Learn How To Get Rid Of Your Stomach

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Michael Louis Struggling with weight issues is never fun. Many factors contribute to weight gain. Things such as stress, overeating and lack of exercise, all play a factor in being overweight. One of the most common areas for weight gain is the stomach. Any excess calories or energy you do not burn off will be converted to fat. Although you may be targeting one area that you wish to lose weight in, you must take a complete look at yourself. It is impossible to lose weight in only one area. Generally, it is harder to lose weight in your trouble spots, such as your stomach. However, there are safe and effective ways to get rid of stomach fat. One of the first things you need to do in order to get rid of stomach fat is to build muscle. Working towards reducing fat, while building muscle, will help reduce those trouble spots. One of the most effective ways to increase muscle, while decreasing fat, is through exercise. Being consistent with your exercise program is very important. Start off with a conditioning program. Whether it is gardening, hiking, or a specific sport, make sure you enjoy it. Any type of physical activity counts towards exercising. Even things such as mowing the lawn or doing laundry count as physical activity. Make the most of your chores and see it as an opportunity to lose weight and become more fit. Next, reduce your daily calorie intake. Start off reducing your calories by a small amount. You do not want to starve yourself or send your body into shock because of too few calories. Also, try replacing a small portion of your carbohydrate and fat intake with lean protein. When trying to get rid of stomach fat, it is important to make sure that the changes you are making can be maintained for a lifetime. Otherwise, you will do more damage to your body than good. Set a goal of losing 1-2 pounds each weak. If you lose anymore than that, you will start to lose muscle. Your appetite will also increase while your metabolism slows down, making it more difficult to get rid of stomach fat. One important thing to keep in mind before starting any diet or exercise program is to consult a physician. Discuss your goals and means with the physician. By making some simple changes in your lifestyle, you can get rid of stomach fat. Adjusting your diet and activity level is essential to losing weight. By maintaining a healthier, more active lifestyle, you can lose the weight your desire. Michael Louis is always on the look out for a good health and work out tips. Capturing the Craft Show Market

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Natalie Goyette Finding the right product to sell at a craft show is extremelyimportant in finding success on the craft show circuit. You mayalready have an excellent craft product or line of products youare creating or even selling, or you may be looking for a craftto produce in order to enter the business. In either case, market research is going to help you find a craft show productthat you can produce at a low enough cost to net a profit - andone that you will enjoy making. If you dont spend time lookinginto what everyone else has at their craft show booth, you mightrepeat what others have, or create a product no one really wants. What exactly is a craft? The dictionary definition of “craft” isto make by hand, therefore, theoretically anything handmade is acraft. Although that’s true, a craft typically falls into acategory of items that are normally sold under the umbrella ofarts and crafts that are either decorative or useful or bothandthat consumers generally purchase for ornamental or practicaluse. The endless creativity of new craft show items is nothingshort of remarkable. The product you choose will likely be oneyou enjoy producing or have a natural affinity for. It might bea skill passed down from generation to generation in yourfamily, but you can also learn it on your own. You may decideto take classes or apprentice to a master to learn a new skillfor producing a craft show item. Yet in order to make your craftbusiness a success, you should consider doing a little bit ofhomework about what craft show item to make, ahead of time. Market research What sells? Wouldn’t you like to have the answer to thatquestion before putting all your resources into creating aproduct? How can you get the answer? Market research. Any largecompany that manufactures products utilizes market researchbefore developing new products. You can use the Internet as wellas common sense. You can ask friends, visit craft shows, galleries, retail stores, eBay and other websites to see what isselling and what isn’t. Ask other artisans and craft show boothowners. Study trends by reading consumer magazines, tradejournals, the fashion section of the newspaper or even watchingTV. Product ideas also come from everyday lifefind a niche and fillit and you will most certainly find success in craft shows. But, you need to make sure you stay on the cutting edge. Children, animals and nature can provide inspiration as well. Jot ideas for craft show items in your notebook or computerwhenever you come up with something you think would be a hotseller. Compile a list of possible items and compare it to whatyou might enjoy producing. Then ask yourself if the craft showitem is practical, decorative, unique, can be priced right (forprofit), has a personal touch, is of excellent quality andoffers exceptional value. You might also want to check out the competition in any categoryyou select. How can you put a spin on your product to make itdistinct and stand out from the others? If you’re a crafter, you’re probably highly creative, so use your creativity to comeup with something imaginative. Without plunging into it full on,see if you can make a few samples and solicit feedback fromfriends or store owners. Do a small craft show and gaugecustomer response. If all systems seem to be saying “go” then gofor it! Find a craft you enjoy making, that you can constructefficiently and cost effectively, and one you can sell, and youhave the craft show market cornered. But, you probably arentgoing to land the perfect product without some groundwork donebeforehand. If you want to find the utmost in craft showsuccess, then take the time to deliver a product that you haveresearched, and watch craft collectors flock to your booth! By Andrew Routledge OK, lets get one thing straight, In hungary goulash is a soup but in the west we have turned it into a main course dish similar to stew. When I make my goulash all my Hungarian friend think its a joke. So let’s get down to making a really great goulash. Goulash, in non Hungarian terms is a combination of meat, Usually beef, carrots, potatoes, sauerkraut and spices in a thickish sauce. The dish can be cooked in a pot on the stove or in a casserole dish in the oven. The ingredients that you will need for goulash are fairly simple and straight forward. Heres the list: 1) Cubes of Beef. I use number eight or number ten cuts for goulash. They are less expensive cuts and quite good enough. 2) Potatoes, diced into large cubes 3) Carrots, cut into thickish rings. 4) Sauerkraut. 5) Onions, cubed and lightly fried. 6) Bullion cubes. 7) Sweet Paprika powder. 8) Black pepper 9) Crushed Garlic. 10) Tomato Puree (or paste. optional) 11) Water Quantities: For a family of four to six people you will need about one kilogramme of beef. The content of potatoes and carrots use in the goulash should make up about two thirds of the quantity of the beef. Method. The first job is to sear the meat on all sides on a lightly oiled skillet. Once thats done transfer the meat into your cooking pot.at this stage add your sweet paprika, sprinking about three teaspoons onto the meat while stirring over the flame. You can now add about one small half teaspoon of black pepper, stirring onto the meat. Now add water until the meat is covered by about one inch of water. Heat until the pot is boiling and then turn the heat down so that the pot is simmering. Add about one large cup of sauerkraut and stirr in. After this add one large cup of chopped and lightly fried onions and one teaspoon of crushed garlic. Leave the pot to cook now for about half an hour stirring only occaisionally. When the half hour is up check to see if the meat is tenderizing. Once the meat is starting to show signs of softening add a bullion cube and taste. You may need to add a little more depending on which type of bullion cubes you use. Stirr well and then add the potatoes and carrots. Continue to stirr occaisionally making sure that the ingredients do not stick to the bottom of the pot. If you like a tomato taste to your goulash, use a little tomato puree to thicken the dish, add two to three teaspoons of tomato puree and stirr in well. Tomato paste is tart and for this reason we do not add it until the final stages of cooking because it causes the meet to toughen again and go rubbery. Aditional cooking time will be needed to soften the meat. Continue to cook the dish until all the ingredients are soft enought to eat but not breaking up. If you like your goulash to have a little bite, you can add a few drops of tabasco. The way that I thicken the sauce is to take about one teaspoon of corn flour mixed into a little water and to stirr it into the boiling mixture. This way the cornflour gives the goulash a nice shiny appearance. An optional extra that gives goulash a pleasant sweetish taste is to add some garden peas. I do this occaisionally for a change. In effect Goulash is an all in meal that has a combination of protein, carbohydrate and vegetables. I like to serve goulash in a long oval bowl on a plate with a few slices of gorgious, thick crusted caroway seed bread. A strong red wine heps the goulash to go down a treat. Buon apetite, bien sur. Enjoy Creating and Growing a Sustainable Vegetable Garden While Feeding Your Family

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Jim Kennard A sustainable vegetable garden means one that can be sustained over time, and would necessarily involve I) growing food you want to eat, so you are motivated to continue growing, II) growing economically, so that it is worthwhile doing, as well as III) taking care of environmental issues, so that the ground will continue to support growing. I) The plants to be grown should be chosen primarily on what your family wants to eat, and what will grow in your locale. After that, Consider using heirloom seed rather than hybrid, if you are very concerned about losing the ability to replace seed each year from commercial sources. However, growing and saving your own seed is difficult and time consuming. An excellent answer to this dilemma is the Garden In A Can heirloom seed provided by Mountain Valley Seed Company (www.mvseeds.com). Other seed companies may have something similar. I recommend you buy a can of this triple-sealed seed, store it against the possible disaster, and then buy and use the best seed you can get and don’t worry about trying to grow for and save your own seeds. II) Using the best growing practices, such as those taught by the world-renowned Dr. J. R. Mittleider, (see www.growfood.com)assure you the greatest yield of healthy vegetables from the least space, and with the least amount of labor and financial inputs per unit of production. A family can be self sufficient in their food requirements from proper gardening of just a small fraction of an acre, and this is the greatest evidence of success in achieving a sustainable garden. III) Gardening should always be done without injuring the land, but rather should improve the land, so that it will continue to support healthy plants indefinitely. Therefore, pesticides and herbicides should be used very judiciously, and wherever possible these issues should be handled by cultural practices as taught by Dr. Mittleider such as 1) eliminating all weeds from the garden area, 2) watering only the plants’ root zone, 3) beginning plants in a protected environment for a fast, healthy and strong start, 4) feeding plants proper amounts of balanced natural mineral nutrients to assure fast and healthy growth, 5) harvesting all plants at maturity to avoid allowing pests and diseases to multiply, and 6) discarding any bug or disease infested plant parts away from the garden, and incorporating healthy plant parts into the soil to improve soil structure. Jim Kennard, President of Food For Everyone Foundation, has a wealth of leadership, financial, business, teaching, and gardening training and experience upon which to draw in helping the Foundation in “Teaching the world to grow food one family at a time.” He is a retired CPA, practicing as managing partner in a Salt Lake City firm since 1972, and has also owned and successfully managed several businesses, including hotels, shopping centers, apartments, and retail establishments during the past twenty five years. Jim has been a Mittleider vegetable gardener for the past twenty-eight years, he is a Master Mittleider Gardening Instructor, and has taught classes and worked one-on-one with Dr. Jacob Mittleider on several gardening projects in the USA and abroad, including projects in Armenia, Madagascar, and Turkey he has conducted by himself. He assists gardeners all over the world from the website FAQ pages and free Gardening Group, and grows a large demonstration garden at Utah’s Hogle Zoo in his spare time.
