Patios And Garden Pavers

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Matthew Anthony Is your concrete or asphalt driveway an eyesore? Do you need to create an attractive retaining wall? Although most people use garden pavers to create patios, driveways and other hardscaping elements are often created using garden pavers, as well. More and more homeowners are tearing up their cracked and stained concrete or asphalt driveways. These people are turning their driveways from an eyesore to a focal point by laying brick, concrete, or interlocking pavers. They often match the driveway pavers to the pavers used on walkways and patios to give the impression that the driveway is just an extension of the outdoor living area. Before you use standard pavers for your driveway, be sure to check the manufacturer’s weight recommendations. Some pavers are too fragile to stand up to the constant stress of automobiles driving back and forth over them. Driveway pavers are manufactured specifically to handle constant wear and tear from automobiles. Before using your driveway, be sure that you use a sealing fluid on the pavers. Oil leaks, gas spills, and dirt are almost impossible to remove from unsealed pavers. Building retaining walls used to involve days of hard labor. It is hard to create the proper angle needed so that the wall does not collapse and building a stacked stone wall is like assembling a large puzzle. However, with the advent of interlocking pavers, it is no longer impossible for inexperienced handymen to quickly create strong and attractive retaining walls. Special interlocking stones have been created specifically for building interlocking retaining walls. When the pavers interlock, the wall is automatically set back at the proper angle to avoid over stressing the wall. Of course, homeowners also still use concrete and brick pavers to create stacked retaining walls. Interlocking retaining wall pavers can also be used to create attractive matching step risers. Creating a stepping stone path is probably the most popular use for garden pavers. Stepping stones are easy to lay down in tight spots. You can set pavers into place one at a time instead of digging up the entire area as you would have to do if you were laying a walkway. Stepping stones can be used separately, as well. Although you can use standard concrete or brick pavers as stepping stones, concrete stepping stones with a pebbled surface give people who are stepping from paver to paver added traction. No matter which pavers you choose, don’t forget that the project you create with them will be the foundation for your garden and a backdrop for your plants. Matthew Anthony has contributed to many gardening sites including garden pavers and patios and decking. Kid Party Stuff - Ten Easy Steps to Keeping Your Child Happy at a Grown-up Party

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Patricia Jensen Plan Ahead: 1. Parents should discuss and agree who is responsible for getting the child settled in to their new surroundings upon arrival at the party. Also, discuss a time frame that each one will spend looking after the child so both have the opportunity to enjoy the party without interruption. For example, one parent takes a turn spending hour with the child, then the other parent takes over. This time arrangement is a realistic and workable solution for many parents. 2. If an older child of babysitting age is available, you may arrange to have her take care of your child during the party so both parents are free to relax and enjoy. 3. Discuss in advance with your child what will be expected of her at the party. Issues such as where the child will be and where the parents will be should be covered, as well as what time the child will be expected to go to bed if thats part of the arrangement. Stress the fun she will have and how proud you will be if s/he behaves “like a big kid”. Keep it lighthearted and accentuate the positive. 4. If possible, arrange play time with a child or children of another party guest, preferably those with whom your child has a history of cooperative play. Anticipate and Avoid Triggers for Bad Behavior: 5. Remember that sleepiness can lead to crankiness, so make sure your child is well rested in advance. This means planning a nap prior to party time for a baby or toddler. In addition, call and make prior arrangements with your hostess as to where your child can nap or rest during party time. 6. If left to their own devices, kids will gravitate to sugary foods, especially if your hostess doesnt have any kid-friendly snacks available. Its smart to provide a meal prior to the party and/or bring a nutritious snack for your child like 100% juice pouches, pretzels, popcorn or animal crackers. Make It Comfortable: 7. Designate an area where the child will “camp out” for the duration of the party. Set the scene for a satisfied toddler with a pop-up nylon tent complete with a familiar blanket, doll or teddy. Even older kids will feel secure at the party location by bringing a sleeping bag and their own pillow from home. 8. Pack a party bag of toys, activity books and games for playtime. An older child can bring a portable DVD player and a couple of favorite movies. Reinforce Good Behavior: 9. Praise your childs good behavior throughout the party, so shell want to keep it up. Expressing your pleasure will reinforce the desired behavior and result in a win-win situation for child and parents alike. 10. Enjoy yourself! Your upbeat attitude will rub off on your child. If youre having fun, she will too. Patricia B. Jensen is a mother of three and kids party enthusiast. Ringtone Composers

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marcus_Peterson]Marcus Peterson A ringtone composer, also known as melody composer, allows a mobile user to compose a new ringtone simply by typing a series of keys on the phone to get a melody. With a ringtone composer you can write very complex music and have it converted into a ringtone in about 2-3 minutes. That way, if you want a ringtone that nobody has ever heard before, or one that you cannot readily find, you can simply invent it. You can write very complex music in ringtone composer and have it converted into a ringtone in about 2-3 minutes. Cell phone manufacturers incorporate exclusive software just for the ringtone composing. Nokring is one example manufactured by NOKIA. Today cell phone manufacturers like Sony Ericsson are providing the very latest polyphonic ringtone composer in which mobile users need not enter all the notes of the polyphonic ringtone for a new melody. The latest composer mixes the notes resulting in pretty good melodies. Not all ringtones need composers. Usually ringtone composer will be available in one of the cell phones menu options called Settings or sometimes in Tone Settings. Just press the New Tone or My Melodies key followed by the Edit option to edit the current ringtone. Then get a Keypress sequence compatible with the ringtone compose. Finally, the same keypress sequence is typed in the same order. Now press Ok or Done and follow other instructions, if any. In some cases, you can adjust the tempo of the new ringtone, which is then saved. Generally its a good idea to delete a previously entered ringtone before replacing it with a new melody. The New Wave of Cardio that Burns the Most Fat

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Chaney Weiner Whenever you think of cardio training the first thing that usually comes to mind is that of treadmills, stationary bikes, stair climbers and how long you will be doing your cardio for. The thought is that the more minutes you do the more fat that you will lose. In reality what happens is that the more traditional cardio you do (treadmill, bike, stair climber) the less fat you tend to lose. Have you ever noticed the people who seem to only do cardio in the gym and most of them are either still overweight or they still look the same. If doing traditional cardio has a tendency to burn less fat then what type of cardio would burn more fat and in less time? The answer is, either hybrid training and/or circuit training. Both types of training involves working the entire body as a unit and can be done either with time intervals (for example, 30 seconds of doing an exercise followed by a 15 second rest and doing a group of exercises) or you can count repetitions. Both of these types involves elevating the heart rate to a safe enough % in order to allow you to burn the most fat. Hybrid training involves having 3-4 mini circuits within a workout. Each of these circuits can consist of 2,3, or 4 exercises and done for 2-3 sets. You can use weights and other fitness equipment combined together. For example you can do a chest exercise with weights and then a back exercise and follow that with a balance or leg exercise. Circuits of 2 exercises are called bi plexes. Circuits of 3 exercises are called tri plexes and circuits of 4 exercises are called quadplexes. Circuit training can involve exercise stations. Typically 12 stations can be used although the number can vary. In this type of training you can use time intervals as well. In the most basic example you would start off at station 1 and do the exercise for 30 seconds without stopping. Then you would rest for 15 seconds and move on to the next station and continue to do so until you complete all 12 stations. This type of training allow you to keep your heart rate elevated while burning more calories than traditional cardio training and in a shorter amount of time. When using either the hybrid method or the circuit method you want to do as many of the exercises, if not all of them both standing/moving (lunges, stepping while pressing, etc) and without the use of machines. The types of equipment you can use is dumbbells, bands, pulleys, bodyweight, medicine balls, and stability balls. Hybrid training and circuit training burns more fat than traditional cardio exercises because you are using your entire body to perform exercises that involve using large muscle groups working together done from a standing position with movement and involving equipment (weights, pulleys, etc) that will help you build muscle/tone while also allowing you do get the same cardio effect. In fact this type of training has been found to be more efficient at burning fat than traditional cardio. In addition hybrid and circuit training gives you an infinite amount of different exercises that you can use to make the process of losing fat and getting in shape fun and enjoyable. Good Wedding Speeches Can Add To Wedding Festivities

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Amy Lee Johnson How can there be a wedding without wedding speeches? The bride’s father is the first to do the honors, followed by the groom and then by the Best Man. At some weddings even the maid of Honor may be asked to speak a few words. The guests wait for the speeches to end before heading for the bar, and joining the celebrations. It is not that wedding speeches are not fun. They are. Good speeches can add life and zest to wedding celebrations. But these speeches are few and far between. The majority of the speeches fall flat, because the speaker has not made adequate preparations. Most wedding speeches are today delivered as a ritual. The bride’s father is too busy making arrangements and has not spent sufficient time reciting his lines; the groom is too overwhelmed by the occasion to stand up and deliver; and the Best Man is busy enjoying the attention to worry about the speech. So, what should be done? Should the guests suffer the speeches in silence at wedding after wedding? Or should the speakers realize the importance of the occasion and do justice to the responsibility entrusted to them? The speakers clearly must rise to the occasion. They must put in the same effort in their speeches as the families of the bride and groom have done in making the wedding arrangements. They must remember that they have not been asked to deliver an impromptu or an extempore speech. They had enough time and warning to get their speeches ready. Now that the time has come they must not let the guests down. The best wedding speeches, of course, are those that are delivered at the spur of the moment. But those who are gifted give these speeches. The rest have to work hard to prepare their speeches. They must spend some time putting their thought on paper, ideally at least a month before the big day. When doing so they should not look for smart one-liners to liven up their speeches but talk about the groom, the bride, the family and friends. The speech should not forget the guests who have taken time off their busy schedules to be present for the wedding. It’s a great family occasion, and the speeches must capture this spirit. A good idea is to rehearse the wedding speeches. This helps eliminate unnecessary words or sentences. The speaker does not have to stutter to locate a word or a sentence. His thoughts flow smoothly. More important, they are suited to the occasion, and add to overall joy and festivities. Caveman Jack’s Self-cleaning Oven

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By David Leonhardt We live in a self-cleaning oven. Not literally, of course. We would burn up if we did. Those things get really HOT! In fact, self-cleaning ovens get so hot that they burn orange juice to a crisp. They get so hot that they melt thermometers. The produce enough hot air to replace the entire American Senate, the British Parliament and the Canadian PMO put together. Unfortunately, certain trade barriers and constitutional clauses impede the replacement of deadwood political assemblies by modern, efficient self-cleaning ovens. The self-cleaning oven is part of the “oven” genus of machines. Households these days also boast a microwave oven, a toaster, a toaster oven, a waffle maker, a bread maker, a popcorn cooker, an auto-shut kettle and several other specialty “ovens”. The combined hot air form all these cooking machines could turn any ordinary home into an instant Parliament. Like the self-cleaning oven, everything is automated these days. It makes life so easy. In fact, the machines could almost run the world without us. Almost. The ovens practically clean themselves. My great, great, great uncle, Caveman Jack, had to clean his oven with a stick. The hardest part was trying to figure out which rock was the oven. Automated doors at the grocery store open and close even when nobody walks through…except for those few that still function properly. Lights turn on an off on their own, as long as there is somebody there to applaud, which brings me to question the self-esteem of lighting fixtures. Lint gets caught in the lint trap. Caveman Jack had to trap his own lint, but then somebody invented the clothes dryer, and people have not had to hunt for lint ever since. Planes fly on autopilot these days. Gone are the days when Caveman Jack had to pedal over a cliff to take flight. Now pilots can sit back, sip a drink and snooze while airplanes fly themselves. Word is that Al Qaeda has developed a self-hijacking plane, but they can’t seem to develop a customer base. Television remote controls, officially called “doodadders”, have made legs virtually redundant, except for bathroom breaks. In Caveman Jack’s days, they had to get up off their rocks to change the channels. If Caveman Jack had had a doodadder, he might still be sitting on his rock praying that somebody will soon invent a bathroom. To be frank, I think the Office of Modern Conveniences has misguided priorities. My oven doesn’t need cleaning all that badly. But my office does. And so does my kitchen. And my laundry room. And my bathroom. Why doesn’t somebody invent a self cleaning bathroom? Oops. I forgot. Somebody did invent a self-cleaning bathroom. On our honeymoon in Rome, we used the bathroom in a Roman Metro station. As soon as we left the bathroom the automatic door shut and the bathroom was rinsed from sprinklers all around. Did I mention that Caveman Jack was a sugar sculptor? He carved lovely sculptures of rocks out of sugar. What if one day, while riding the Roman Metro to a sugar sculpture showing, Caveman Jack suddenly had to rush to the washroom? Leaving the washroom, he remembers his prize sculpture entitled “Rock” sitting on the bathroom floor. Too late. The automatic doors close. The water flushes the bathroom clean. Later that day at the sugar sculpture exhibit, everyone gathers ’round and marvels at the latest offering by Caveman Jack: “Little Rock”. Caveman Jack is probably happy that he doesn’t have a self-cleaning oven. Too much convenience is not always good for the soul. Besides, there’s nothing like an open fire to cook a juicy mammoth steak. Saaaay…how about a self-cleaning fire pit? About The Author David Leonhardt is a freelance writer. Using Your Mobile Phone Whilst Abroad (Global Sim Card)

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gary_Parsons]Gary Parsons We naturally turn to our networks when looking at taking our mobile phones abroad, not giving a seconds thought to what other services are available to us and if theres much difference in cost. Several companies have now spotted there is a gap in the market and are working with mobile operators throughout the world to help reduce rates for those of us who travel abroad on our familys annual holiday. For these occasions; contacting your operator and activating a roaming tariff on your account is probably best. However, if you expect to make several calls whilst away then you should look at other alternatives. One of your options is to purchasing a pre-pay sim card (generally known as a global sim card). This will cost you around 25 and will usually come complete with a small amount of credit, with the option of adding to this whilst away, either online or by phone. Its important you remember to pass the details of your new sim card to family and friends as you will be assigned a different phone number and is completely separate to any contract you have in place already. You will need to ensure that your phone is not locked for use on your network only and is also a tri-band phone; meaning it will work on different types of mobile networks other than in the UK. If you do not have this type of phone then there are usually different mobile phone deals available from card retailers, obviously coming at an added cost. By choosing this method, you are expected to save up to 90% compared to using the roaming tariff offered by your existing network. We often put our [http://www.moneysupermarket.com/MobilePhones/default.aspx]mobile phones to the back of our mind when preparing to travel abroad. Differences Between Men and Women

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Helen Brown No place demonstrates the differences between men and women better than the average family home. For centuries women have tried to tame men into understanding what living under a roof means. But males are genetically programmed to run around waving spears in the bush. Men have a special gene that allows them to crunch barefoot across a kitchen floor without noticing it needs sweeping. They think damp towels strewn on floors have built in homing devices that fly them back neatly folded on to bathroom rails. They believe the only time toilets need cleaning is when people are coming over for dinner. Even the tamest of men who have learnt to pile their dirty socks and underpants in some designated place like a corner of the bedroom or the back of the wardrobe have no idea what happens next. They think their clothes reappear magically clean and scented with ironing aid in their drawers and cupboards. When for some reason my husbands favourite shirt hasnt rematerialised within a couple of days of wearing it, hes genuinely mystified. Has anybody seen my shirt? hell ask, as if the thing has run away like a puppy. Hes equally mystified if the shirt returns minus a button. Ill fix it, he says. He then takes the shirt to the laundry and drapes it over the tool box, which (thanks to imaginative design in a Korean plastics factory) resembles a larger version of my sewing box. If after a few days, the shirt remains button-less, hell sigh and offer to take it to a professional repairer. I thought you were going to fix it? Ill say. I was but I couldnt find any buttons. For a moment I wonder if its worth asking which box hes been looking in the tool box or the sewing box. He does have trouble identifying things around the house. The other day when I asked him to put a dirty towel in the machine he said Which machine? Most men dont realise shirt buttons cluster like shellfish at the bottom of a sewing box. The prospect of being replaced by a professional repairer is enough to get me diving for the pearly little things. Men have strange ideas about what needs keeping and what should be thrown out. He always puts leftover bits of pizza in the fridge, promising hell eat them for breakfast. The only people who seriously eat cold pizza for breakfast are 16 year old boys. Two weeks later an evil stink wafts through the kitchen. Everything in the fridge is tainted with a sour flavour. Like Jacques Cousteau about to plunge into the deep, I put on rubber gloves and breathe deeply. The source of the stench is on the bottom shelf lurking behind a two year old jar of feijoa jam and bottles of beer waiting for the day an entire rugby team drops by for drinks - two wedges of what look like the inner soles of decomposing running shoes. His forgotten pizza. If only he could have applied the same theory to the plastic bottle I used to store laundry liquid. That bottle may have looked a bit messy with congealed blue goop down its sides, but it was a major environmental project. Instead of replacing the bottle every few weeks, I refilled it with liquid from a cardboard container. While my efforts probably werent doing much for pine forests, they were no doubt stopping several icebergs melting and saving half a dozen whales. The other morning I was horrified to discover the old plastic bottle was missing. After rattling through various cupboards, I realised what must have happened. Hed mistaken my precious laundry bottle for rubbish and binned it. Im not saying another word. A middle aged woman going on about a plastic laundry bottle could sound naggy, possibly even a touch insane. Besides, having a spear wielding warrior around has advantages. Every now and then he becomes a fearless dispatcher of spiders, an investigator of creepy noises in the night, a remover of dead rats and I cant imagine how wed survive without him In the meantime, readers have sent in fascinating emails about household objects. According to Clive Aim of Wanganui, Velcro can be lethal after all. He says the deadly fires on Apollo One in 1967 were fuelled by Velcro astronauts had used to stop things drifting around the cabin. Cheap Polyphonic Ringtones

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Richard_Romando]Richard Romando A cell phone user can download polyphonic ringtones to his handset from various sources like the Internet, other cell phone users, ringtone providers, etc. Most of the ringtone providers offer downloading of ringtones for a charge. The ringtone providers need to pay royalties to the recording companies for the original tune and spend money for the coding of the ringtone. Moreover, they have to pay the network provider to make the ringtones available for the end-users. Polyphonic ringtones can easily be pirated, as they can be transferred easily via infrared transfer through the network or by manually coding the notes in phone with a composer. Free polyphonic ringtones, the first choice of every end-user, are the most popular. The reason, obviously, is that that they are free. Paid polyphonic ringtones are available from a number of ringtone providers. Most of the premium providers charge much more for polyphonic ringtones than for monophonic ringtones. However, there are some who provide cheap polyphonic ringtones. Web.tiscali.it has thousands of cheap polyphonic ringtones in its database. The site adds hundreds of new tones every week, and the tones are available for nominal prices. Another site, www.plusone.com, is treasure of high quality affordable ringtones; www.comparestoreprices.co.uk offers the lowest of prices among all of the polyphonic ringtone providers. Another major provider of inexpensive polyphonic ringtones is www.gaiaworld.com. For a mobile phone user, the most inexpensive way to acquire a polyphonic ringtone is via infrared transfer. It costs him/her nothing but a little power. Conversion software available on the Internet allows a user to convert mp3, wave, and MIDI files to cell phone polyphonic ringtone or to compose his own polyphonic ringtone on a PC. These tones can be transferred to the phone using a data cable or IR port. Welding Safety And Certification

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Aurel Radulescu Welding is one of the most resourceful activities in the world. Defined as a fabrication process that is used to join materials, welding often requires the melting of a material before joining it to another through the use of heat. The welding industry employs a large number of workers and, because it is a dangerous job, it requires specialized training and certification. In addition to pre-employment training, welding also requires specific safety measures that must be followed by every worker. The proper knowledge combined with todays technology can reduce the likelihood of injuries related to welding. However, the risks associated with any job can never be completely eliminated. Because welding commonly involves exposure to extreme heat, there is a significant risk of burns. In an effort to prevent this risk, welding professionals must wear protective clothing, including leather gloves and special long sleeve jackets. The additional coverage will help to prevent the likelihood of flames coming into contact with the skin and thereby helps to prevent burns. Actual contact is not the only risk associated to welding. In fact, the brightness of the welding process is often damaging to the workers eye. A condition may develop as a result of the cornea becoming inflamed and/or the retina becoming burned after exposure to ultraviolet light. In order to prevent this occurrence, welding professionals are required to wear a helmet and goggles with a darkened face plate. A number of companies also manufacture helmets with the face plate built-in. Welding professionals are also often exposed to harmful gases and/or smoke. In an effort to reduce the workers exposure to these potentially dangerous pollutants, proper ventilation must be provided. Employers who offer welding positions are responsible for the care and safety of their workers and, as such, are required to uphold certain safety standards in maintaining a proper work environment. In order to find work as a welding professional, interested candidates are usually required to attend classes for certification. The length of time spent in this type of learning environment will vary depending on the position and required expertise of the welder. In order to enroll in welding certification classes, candidates will likely be required to pay a small fee before signing up. The certification process is not lengthy and classes typically last for several months. After successful completion, the graduate is awarded with a welding certification. At that time, he/she may apply for jobs in the industry that is related to their field of study.
